Yesterday I explained why you shouldn’t listen to negative comments, today find out why you SHOULD.

Negative Comments Can Be Good For Us

Yes it’s true.

While we don’t want to let one or two peoples opinion stop us from creating a product that is new or unique, we do need to understand what peoples objections are and why they have them.

It’s called feedback. And ALL feedback we receive is vital even if it’s negative or upsetting to us.

Feedback

Up until the time we seek feedback our invention will only have been seen through our eyes. At times we can become blind by our desire to create a product or to solve a problem.

The feedback we receive can help identify problems or limitations we may have missed.

Feedback also helps us to see the perceptions others have about our idea or product.

Problems Or Limitations

If someone has a reservation about your product ask them what it is and why they feel that way. Don’t be defensive, don’t even offer a rebuttal. Simply listen.

Understand that any form of feedback we receive will be beneficial.

Then decide, “Is this going to be a problem to my buyers”.

If the answers is yes at least you know now and can try to find a fix or work around.

Perceptions

Some times the problem may just be in the persons understanding of what your invention is and what the benefits are. Again don’t try to explain it to them. Simply listen. Ask them what THEY think your invention is.

If they say something different to what your idea is meant to be, ask yourself “are my buyers going to have a problem understanding what my invention is”.

By allowing someone to freely give their opinion without fear of upsetting you, you can gain key insights into where you might have a problem now or in the future.

“if you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything very innovative”
