David Udy is the inventor behind ToolsAway a great little device that helps keep  all your garden tools neat and tidy and in one place. The device was created for personal use but then David Udy decided to release it to the world.

In the interview we discover the ongoing problems David Udy has in manufacturing the product at the cheapest price while trying to keep the highest quality and also the problem of getting the product to market.

Have you invented before? If so how many inventions have you got?

I have invented lots of items primarily for my own use. I have patented two of them. ToolsAway and Instahandle.

What inspired you to create this product in the first place?

I got tired of the tools falling off the wall and hitting my Harley!

How long after having the idea did it actually take to create a working model for Tools Away?

It actually took about 10 years. The original invention is still in my garage and looks and acts nothing like the current model.

What problems did you face from taking your idea and making it into an actual working product? And how did you solve the problems?

Once I had a basic working prototype I was lucky enough to find a local mold maker/manufacture to help me create a design that could be molded and would work.

The only problem I have is that they are a bit expensive to manufacture locally and in small quantities.

How many units have you sold so far?

About 1500

What the current avenues are using to sell ToolsAway, how are they doing and why did you chose them?

I’d be happy to license it to some reputable manufacture. All I’ve had is enquiries from phony DRTV companies and phony marketers. So I’m going it alone for now. I figure if I sell enough of them I will eventually get a real companies interest.

What has been the hardest part of the whole process?

Getting it in front of potential buyers. when they see it, it sells.

What plans do you have for the Tools Away in the future?

Selling them myself and continuing to look for a company that is real and interested.

What advice could you give to anybody out there who wants to be an inventor?

Other than following the rules for a patent, stop worrying about someone stealing your idea. You will have to beat down doors to get anyone to buy it let alone steal it.

How much does Tools Away cost and where can our readers buy it?

It has a MSRP of $39.95 we sell them at a few local stores and on the internet. They are 34.95 about to be reduced to $29.95 on our website toolsaway.com.
