We’ve previously covered why you need to be an expert in your own product, and areas we think you should be an expert in, now we’re going to explain how to become an expert.
What Makes Someone An Expert?
Experts are the people that, while they may not know everything, they know more then anyone else. They’re the best source of information on their chosen subject.
If you ask them a question they can give you the best and most in depth answer available.
They’re comfortable talking about their chosen field because they’ve amassed a vast knowledge on all different angles and aspects their subject covers.
How Do I Become An Expert
To become an expert you’re going to have to gain as much knowledge on your product as you can. Here are three ways to gain that extra knowledge.
Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions
When we we’re kids we harassed our parents, teachers, elders with questions. We were new to the world and so wanted to know how things worked.
Most adults stop asking questions, I think it’s because they don’t want to look dumb by not knowing the answer, but whatever the reason is, it’s silly.
To become an expert you’re going to need to bombard those people who have superior knowledge.
Part two in this series is a perfect example of just SOME of the questions you should be asking yourself.
Challenge Everything
Don’t just accept the status quo, just because something’s like it is at the moment doesn’t mean it has to be, or that it should remain that way.
As I’ve already said, the number one tool an inventor can have is the power of what if?. The ability to not dismiss a problem or simply accept it but to think, what if…..
Experts will challenge everything, even the simple “rules” of life. They will want to know why the rule exists, if it’s true, if there’s and alternative that would be better. They wont just accept an answer, they will want to know why.
By just learning the answer you lean one perspective, by learning the reason you learn the theory, from there you can adjust, adapt or improve the theory and make it better.
Watch And Learn
Sometimes taking a step back and watching others can be huge value. Often we get stuck inside our own heads going over and over the same thoughts.
By watching others we can gain a new perspective, allow yourself to be inspired by others.
Try and watch how others interact with products that are similar to yours. Maybe they’ll do something you never thought of, maybe when using your competitors product you notice they have a particular problem, you can then take this into consideration when making yours, helping to differentiate your own product even more.
Finally
You may already be an expert and not know it, for instance, who knows what single mums need better then a single mum, who’s going to be able to understand the day to day problems an elderly person has better then the elderly.
Also you don’t have to be an expert in your product at the moment, but you do have to apply yourself and make sure you become one. The more you know about your product the better decisions you will be able to make at all the different stages your product is going to go through.
